OUT of both habit and hope, Jess checked his phone for messages as soon as he got in his car. There was only one, from a sender called Make My Day E-Cards.

Fingers trembling, he opened it.

A tight cluster of glistening purple flowers appeared. Slowly, they opened into a bouquet. The masked figure of a man rose from the bouquet’s center like a hatless Lone Ranger. He lifted one side of his mask and winked.

From a not-so-secret admirer read the line that appeared at the bottom of the viewing pane.

The week was off to a hell of a start.
